A magnificent 19th century French Roberval balance scale, sourced in France.
Heavy and sculptural with its original pierced cast iron base, paw feet, and twin aged brass pans — the deep bowl and the flat plate — retaining a gorgeous untouched patina. Stamped 8Kg and foundry mark JE to the front.
This is the iconic balance found in French markets and grocers from the 1890s. Invented by Gilles de Roberval in 1669, this form became the workhorse of every épicerie in France.
A true statement piece for a kitchen island, store counter, or open shelving. Functional, decorative, and increasingly hard to find with both original pans.
French, circa 1890-1910. Cast iron and brass.
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear to paint and beautiful tarnish to brass.
Dimensions: 17-1/2"l x 6-1/4"w x 9"h
